Chevy Chase Country Club continues their monthly ballroom dance classes with the fifth dance of the season to be held in the historic Grand Ballroom: the Rhumba. The Rumba is a folk dance performed in duple time with complex footwork that originated in Cuba with
Spanish and African elements. Taken from the Spanish word rumbo, which means “party”, the Rhumba incorporates rhythmic improvisation to create a smooth, unique sound and dance. The Rhumba gained popularity beginning in the 1920s and is often enjoyed at informal celebrations and gatherings.
The event will feature live music by the 10-piece Dick Elliot Orchestra and instructional dance lessons by Chicago legends Bob and Penny Urbon, followed by three hours of open dancing. For those who need a little liquid courage, a cash bar is available (prices range from $3 – $10).

Chevy Chase Country Club continues their monthly ballroom dance classes this July with the fourth dance of the season to be held in the historic Grand Ballroom: the Cha Cha. The Cha Cha was developed by English dance instructor Pierre Lavelle after he visited Cuba in
1952. Noticing that the Rumba was often danced with extra beats, Lavelle created this Latin dance as a fusion of the Rumba and the Mambo. The Cha Cha’s name is inspired by the distinct, repetitive foot rhythm of the dance steps as well as the style of music that accompanies it.
The event will feature live music by the 10-piece Dick Elliot Orchestra and instructional dance lessons by Chicago legends Bob and Penny Urbon, followed by three hours of open dancing. For those who need a little liquid courage, a cash bar is available (prices range from $3 – $10).
