Chicago q celebrates National Tomato Month

Heirloom Tomato Salad, $8.25

Chicago q, Chicago’s hottest spot for upscale barbecue is the perfect place to indulge in the season’s tomato bounty as Chef/Partner Lee Ann Whippen turns to fresh and local ingredients to enhance her dishes. 

In celebration of the season, Chicago q will bring back the Heirloom Tomato Salad, $8.25. This dish is prepared with the tomatoes from the weekly Division Street Market. These tomatoes are sliced thinly and served with basil chiffonade, fresh cracked pepper and a honey vinaigrette.

Chef Whippen also incorporates tomatoes in many of her salads including the Baby Greens Salad, $7.25, which is topped with smoked grape tomatoes and cornbread croutons. The tomatoes are smoked for 15 minutes at 225 degrees over Hickory and Applewood in Chicago q’s 1,000-pound Southern Pride smoker (kitchen tours are available upon request).

Chicago q is open for lunch, dinner and weekend brunch. Prices do not include tax and gratuity.

Homegrown Tomatoes at Troquet

This Spring, Troquet invested in a small plot at The Montrose Green, a pop-up victory garden, to garden and plant their own vegetables and herbs to be used in the restaurant. This space, which was once unused private and city owned urban space was converted to a community based allotment garden located at 1819 West Montrose Ave.

This month, in honor of National Tomato Month, they have grown juicy cherry tomatoes. Chef de Cuisine Jason Myers has a special appetizer in mind for these and as they ripen he will also incorporate them into daily specials, including the vegetable of the day, soup of the day and quiche of the day. 

In addition to tomatoes, the restaurant is also growing mint, basil, oregano, rosemary, dill, thyme, squash, beets, parsley, green beans and lettuce.
