CRU UNVEILS WINE LIST
Featuring over 100 bottles, selections by the glass and an inspiring list of flights
Cru Café & Wine Bar has unveiled a wine list of more than 100 bottles presented by Sommelier Bret Heiar that is quirky, fun and quite impressive. Says Heiar “Here at Cru we proudly support small producers and sustainable farming. All of the wines on the menu have a story and a soul. Whether it’s grower champagne, small family owned domains, multi-generation winemakers or just passionate winemakers, they all share a common philosophy about farming and winemaking.” All of the wines on the list at Cru were carefully chosen for both their personality and their pure expression of geography. Heiar strived to find the best examples of all wines globally and he hopes guests enjoy the story they tell. “One thing lacking in many American wine menus is affordable older vintages and we try to always have older wine on hand”, notes Heiar.
Wine list highlights include the Xinomavro Karydas (Naoussa, Greece), Turner Pageot Grenache/Syrah (Languedoc, France), Pierre Moncuit, Champagne (France) and Passcopisciaro Nerello Mascalese (Sicily, Italy). A sample of the wine list is below and the complete menu is available upon request.
SAMPLE OF MENU:
09 Grenache/Syrah, Turner Pageot, Languedoc, France, $45
This wine is a stunner. Biodynamic, lush, red berries, spice.
08 Nerello Mascalese, Passopisciaro, Sicily, Italy, $65
Based on the slopes of the volcano Mount Etna, this wine is ethereal and intelligent like a cross between burgundy and barolo. Full of personality and made in small batches.
08 Xinomavro, Karydas, Naoussa, Greece, $12/$48
Basically two sets of hands touch these grapes. Nestled high in the Macedonia Ranges, these organically farmed old vine grapes make a dry, rustic, sophisticated wine, a staff favorite.

About Sommelier Bret Heiar
Bret Heiar’s culinary life started as line cook in high school where he worked in the kitchen at various restaurants. It wasn’t until he moved to the front of the house that his love affair with all things fermented and distilled began. He worked as many harvests in as many countries as he could and became a certified sommelier. He traveled, drank, and visited wineries, distilleries, and breweries in Spain, Italy, France, Argentina, Mexico, and Australia as well as in Oregon and throughout California. He has participated in Oregon Pinot Camp, Napa’s Touch the Terrior, and Paso Roble’s Hospice du Rhone, and in 2011 he won a trip to visit Australia’s wine regions by receiving the highest score in the Australian Wine Council’s year long program. Bret has been the Wine Director for Feast and Goddess and Grocer for the past 8 years and has been featured in The Chicago Tribune, Chicago Collection magazine, The Chicagoist, and Nation’s Restaurant News.
