Whole Foods Market Hennepin Set to Open September 25

Minneapolis, MN- Whole Foods Market (Nasdaq: WFM), the world’s leading natural and organic foods supermarket, will open a new 37,500 square foot location in Downtown Minneapolis on Wednesday, September 25. The much-anticipated store, located at 222 Hennepin Avenue, will provide Minneapolis with great-tasting, high-quality, natural and organic foods in a convenient and fresh contemporary setting.

Community Involvement

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to finally open a store in Downtown Minneapolis.  One of our missions, as a community member, is to positively impact the culture and goals that continue to shape and make Downtown the incredible place that it is,” states Store Team Leader Bob Eisenbise. Whole Foods Market Hennepin’s first partnerships include a Community Support Day (Thursday, October 31) where 5% of the day’s net sales will go to Free Arts Minnesota, a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing the healing powers of artistic expression into the lives of abused, neglected, at-risk children and their families. Customers using reusable bags for their groceries this October – December will be able to donate their dime refund to The Link, a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide supportive services throughout the Twin Cities for youth who are homeless, dropping out of school or are in the juvenile justice system.

Environmental Stewardship: Keeping Materials Local

By specifying materials sourced or manufactured in or around the state, Whole Foods Market reduced potential environmental impacts resulting from transportation and helped support the local economy. Concrete, structural steel, metal studs, drywall and millwork were purchased within 500 miles of the store. Reclaimed wood can be found throughout the store, carefully dismantled from local barns, fences and even pickle vats. The decorative tile used behind the Cheese Counter and

Coffee and Gelato Bar is hand-made by Minnesota tile artisans, Mercury Mosaics, with environmentally-friendly, lead-free glaze and clay mixed from the bottom of the Mississippi River. Countertops are also locally made by Rust Brothers and Cambria Countertops with the café’s large Community Table designed and manufactured by Icon Modern. This Midwest company creates beautiful works from urban trees that have fallen in storms or from disease (wood can be traced back to the street or park where the tree originally grew).

Opening: a Celebration

Excited customers are encouraged to stop out for the store’s Grand Opening Ceremony at 8:45am on September 25. Leading up to the ceremony, customers can enjoy a light breakfast, warm brew by Peace Coffee, tunes by Hipshaker Minneapolis and enter to win a grand prize package valued at over $1000. For more details about the opening and a sneak peak of the store’s interior, the community is invited to like the store’s Facebook page and follow along at www.facebook.com/wholefoodsmarkethennepin.

Nebraska and western Iowa vendors offered chance to meet with Whole Foods Market buyers

Whole Foods Market, the world’s leading natural and organic grocer, is holding a local vendor fair Thursday, August 22 at the Marriott Hotel 808 R Street. Lincoln NE, 68508 to discover new products to sell at the Lincoln store. The event offers local producers the opportunity to meet with Whole Foods Market buyers and learn the viability of having their products sold in the new store, with potential for growth within the region and the company. Only vendors that grow fruits and/or vegetables commercially or manufacture and package products in Nebraska or western Iowa are eligible. Those interested in learning more are encouraged to visit wholefoodsmarket.com/stores/lincoln.

“As a mission-based company, Whole Foods Market believes in supporting local farmers, producers and artisans by buying locally,” comments Stefanie Garcia, local forager. “There are so many great products available right here in Nebraska and Iowa. We eagerly look forward to learning about them and working with their creators to potentially carry them in our store.”

With a companywide goal of sourcing 20 percent of products from local producers, each store works independently to acquire products that best suit the tastes and needs of customers. Vendors are required to ensure their product meets the company’s strict quality standards.

“Every product gets its start somewhere. We love working with local vendors and have many success stories of products being carried regionally or even nationally after starting in a local store,” states Garcia.

Whole Foods Market believes there are many benefits to buying local, including:

  • Local farm production helps stores and customers stay connected to the seasons, regional varieties and the people who grow our food.
  • Family-run farms put a face behind the product. Many local growers visit Whole Foods Market stores to share their products and to meet the people who buy their food.
  • Shoppers are given the freshest, most flavorful seasonal offerings of regional growers.
  • Supporting local family growers and co-operatives creates local jobs and ensures the continuation of independent farming and the diversity of land use.
